Patricia A. DeYoung, PhD has a Masters of Social Work and a PhD in Philosophy of Education from the University of Toronto. She is a Registered Clinical Social Worker in Ontario, Canada and has been a practitioner of psychotherapy since 1996. She was a founding faculty member of the Toronto Institute for Relational Psychotherapy, where she taught for 25 years. Dr. DeYoung has written three books: Relational Psychotherapy: A Primer; Understanding and Treating Chronic Shame: Healing Right Brain Relational Trauma; and Shame and Grace: Six Essays on Falling Apart and Becoming Whole Again.

Here Pat shares insights from her work as a relational psychotherapist and from her research on chronic shame. She discusses shame’s relationship to addiction, narcissism, and to the dysregulation in ourselves and in the culture writ large.
