Bernardo Kastrup, PhD, is a computer scientist, who has recently completed a second doctoral degree in philosophy. He is author of Rationalist Spirituality, Why Materialism is Baloney, Dreamed Up Reality, Meaning in Absurdity, Brief Peeks Beyond, More Than Allegory, and The Idea of the World. He has published several papers in Scientific American arguing for metaphysical idealism.

Here he explains how the analogy of dissociative identity disorder (or multiple personality disorder) can help us to understand how separate, individual conscious entities emerge from a single, universal mind. He also highlights the implications of idealist metaphysics for gaining an appreciation for the inherent meaning of life. He contrasts this with the materialist push toward consumerism.
