In the late 19th century, the Golden Dawn emerged as a beacon of the Western esoteric tradition, introducing what many considered novel magical practices. But a closer look reveals a different story. Today, we base our discussion on a critical examination of Alison Butler’s influential thesis, positing that the Golden Dawn was a modern innovator using active visualization techniques and unmediated invocation methods. However, recent scholarship, particularly a study by Christopher A. Plaisance, challenges this view, suggesting these practices might not be as novel as once thought.
